PS3 was sold at a huge loss at launch. To put this in perspective for you, the first Blu-Ray player cost $1000. A few months later the PS3 retailed for $600.
The Vita is also sold at a loss. It's priced the same as the PSP at launch.
If they cared about $$$$ they wouldn't sell their consoles at a loss.
