...it was a huge upgrade over my 3G.  why is it people expect everyone except iphone users to get a new phone every 2-3 years. 

I think you have people that are on the S cycle and those that are on the whole number cycle.  I have a Iphone 4 regular and did not upgrade so I skipped the S and got a Skyrocket, but will be getting apple's next phone.
