I love this infographic, because the only reason the album download isn't right up near cdbaby is because of the outrageous money grab of the label. But without a vast, complicated physical distribution network, one of the key services a label provides falls away completely. With modern audio technology, labels are far from necessary for production as well.

So the only real value a record label provides right now is marketing. If an artist can self-market (Hello, internet!) and sell only 20% as many albums dealing directly with digital retailers, they can earn more money than if they sign with a label.

There's also a lot of data cut off from that infographic which demonstrates that services like Spotify provide a comically pathetic amount of money to artists. Since Spotify isn't even making money for itself, I've got to wonder what the point of the service is if it doesn't manage to get anybody paid.
