Ok. Think I got a handle on peoples thoughts here. Here we go again......ill try to be as organized as I can
The original question is "Does MS have a lack of exclusive new Ips?" and this stems from the selfishness of all of us. We as core gamers want core titles.
However, as all Nintendo fans can tell you, once the corporation decides to gain more success by attracting the mass market, you HAVE TO SHARE and deal with it. This includes many shovelware and casual titles alongside core titles to appeal to two markets at once.
Do I care....off course I do. I would much rather prefer to have all kinect resources funnelled into more core titles. But then again I have the gift of seeing inside the head of others to try to understand why they do what they do. Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony are all profit driven. Nintendo branched out and attained success and now MS is doing the same. If Move was a success on the level of Kinect and Wii I guarantee Sony would have shifted more resources towards making casual Move titles.
PS3 gamers are the only ones of the 3 that aren't sharing the console with casuals. This may please them, but its clear with Sony financials and 3rd place standing that appealing to JUST core gamers isn't a sustainable strategy anymore. So its all short term gains until Sony follows MS and Nintendo. But I personally like how unlike the Wii, I can still use a gamepad controller while Kinect remains an option. But I digress.
Creating new retail Ips isn't easy as MS said. Games like Too Human and Alan Wake just weren't commercial successes and costed a lot of time and money. MS is just taking the safe route, expanding upon gamer proven successful IPS such as Halo, Gears, Fable, and Forza. By contrast, we have seen with new exclusive PS3 IP's is that while quality made and original, most (except Uncharted) have faded throughout the years and mostly under performed to expectations and multiplats of similar nature.
That is why XBLA has been Microsoft venue to create new Ips for years. Lower budget and lesser barrier of entry has led to XBLA to be a hub for creative variety and quality, bringing diversity to the 360 catalog. Am I using XBLA as a crutch to elevate 360's library as a whole over PS3 to compensate for lack of retail exclusives? Offcourse I am...but doesn't make me wrong. To be prejudice or to turn a blind eye away from great games due to their budget and price.....well you get the idea.
Overall, what MS has going is justifiable. Most gamers are content with 3rd party offerings, which 360 is usually the preferred choice. Retail exclusives such as Halo and Gears, have far more impact and buzz then most PS3 IPs, XBLA gives 360 variety and creative games, and Kinect is doing its thing making 360 a entertainment hub with its social games and voice commanding media options.
Not to mention, MS is opening many new studios, recognizing that with popularity comes responsibility to have exclusive content. We will be seeing far more exclusives come next gen once MS's 6 new studios in 2011 get to work.
