It feels kind of weird that I actually have to tell people this. About any grown up person I know would consider this to be obvious reasoning, but then again, not everyone lives here where even putting kids in jail wouldn't be a consideration, by law. |
Sweden is not nearly as diverse as the US, I believe.
And the fact that they are "kids" does not change the fact that they should know better. Regardless of how moronic their parents may or may not be, they should know better by the simple fact that they exist in this world and are clearly capable of basic human functions. Whether from school, or news stories, or whatever, there is no reason for them to ever think that such an action is ever okay. And they should be punished for their actions. That will not only teach them a lesson, but also reinforce the fact that this is wrong and completely unacceptable in society. Also, automatically blaming the parents for this is not the right way to go. The parents could be trying to do a great job, and could indeed with other children. Maybe these teens are just assholes in general, or are just stupid, or rebelling against their parents. The fact remains that these people chose to attack that guy, and they need to live with the consequences of their actions.
Kids of a certain age, maybe. But these are hardly what I would call kids. Under 18? Sure. But kids? They're in their teens. That's old enough to know right from wrong. Punish them severely, and they'll learn their lesson. I see no problem in sending teens to jail for doing crap like this.
