Whatever, he said he's going after the hardcore market anyway. He is right to some extent, but as soon as the PS4 and the Xbox 720 launch they will probably switch back to a similar strategy to the Wii.

I would love to see your reasoning on this.

If the PS4 and the Xbox 720 are hardcore consoles like I expect them to be then the Wii U doesn't stand a chance, especially after the reputation they have gained this generation. The PS4 and the Xbox 720 will probably have the hardware and the games that hardcore gamers want, Nintendo will probably panic and switch back to the same strategy they had with the Wii.

Weak reasoning as I expected.

The Wii-U so far seems like it will be just fine in getting third party ports next gen because:

. Nintendo is making it easy to develop for

.Nintendo is using a high-capacity disk

. Nintendo have a headstart to build a core userbase for third party games so that they continue to sell on their console even after PS4/720 release.

. Nintendo is working to make their online greatly improved. They asked third parties what they want in the online system, they are making it open, they are partnering with EA for help in developing it and it seems to have some neat features like video chat, leaderboard, messaging and friendlist display on the controller's screen based on what was shown in Ubisoft's developer round table for Ghost Recon Online. It won't be as good as Xbox Live but indications so far point to it being very good.

. Game Engines are being made to be very scale-able and Wii-U is using modern tech that will be able to do the same things as PS4 and 720 just with less fidelity and scaled down so porting to it next gen won't be a problem unlike this gen with Wii's ancient, archaic hardware.

. The industry has become very multi-platform dependent. Devs are porting to any hardware that can handle their games so they can make as much profit as possible. Even ipads and iphones are getting ports like Dead Space. So unless devs hate money they will port their games to Wii-U next gen since it will be able to handle them.

. Nintendo are obviously willing to make deals with third parties to take advantage of their headstart just like Sony did with PS2 and MS with 360. They are doing the same thing on 3DS with Monster Hunter and layton.

Also, MS are clearly interested in appealing to both core gamers and casual gamers. What they want is to get into as many homes to be their entertainment center and they are broadening their with Kinect appeal to do so.
