People fear anything that challenges their faith.

I for one, am a Christian who believes in science. Big bang? check. Evolution? check. Global warming? check.

I don't take every story in the Old Testament as literal truth. Jesus told many parables, I see the creation story along those lines. Thousands of years ago, there's no way big bang or evolution would fly (as scientific observations were limited by cultural and technological development), so we had creation stories. It's that simple.

Sadly, many people cannot reconcile what they've been told is the truth, with the reality we are presented with. They form an alternate reality for themselves, coming up with explanations and rationalizations for their reality, much like conspiracy theorists. If they would learn to think for themselves, and not blindly believe what people have told them for years, they could see the world for what it is -- and faith and religion most certainly do have a place in this world. There's no reason one can't be a devout Christian and believe in the findings of science.

I see science, and the universe, with all its mysteries and secrets, as a great gift to man. Rather than shun this gift, we should embrace it and enjoy it. The universe is a fascinating and amazing place, nobody should let archaic ideas from centuries long past ruin that.
