And given that MS and Sony will almost certainly offer a true generation leap then a N64 to PS2 leap is likely, more likely than even a Dreamcast to xbox leap. Hell given the history of Sony it is possible that they will try and use the PS4 to push 4K TVs and even for upscaling from 1080p+ native will require at least a 9x leap in power to make it look nice at solid framerates. And given that MS design hardware arround what developers want they will likely be using Epic's Samaritan tech demo as the target for their console which is talking arround a 8x leap. By 2013 the Xbox will be 8 years old, they managed to make a generational leap from Xbox to 360 in just 5, the tech is there to make it happen. And then there is Crytech have said they want a 10x leap MINIMUM next gen and they would prefer something like 16x the GPU power of current consoles and at least 8GB of RAM if they are going to offer a true generation leap in graphics with CGI movie level graphics, while that is outragous and will not happen unless the consoles launch late 2015 at the earliest it should give an indecation of the kind of leap some big developers are pushing for. Also do you really think that NaughtyDog would be scared of moving to the next generation if was only a Dreamcast to PS3 size leap? |
I have been keeping up with Wii-U info more than you have. I've seen all the little leaks from sources on GAF and Beyond3D who have seen not just early dev-kits but the ones that came after as well. I know more about what to expect than you who are basing your info on a weak old rumor and Iwata's remarks back when the console was on its' early dev-kit as if he is going to declare it some beast of a console when he knows Sony's and MS' are going to beat it especially when Nintendo doesn't show off tech like they use to back in the GC/n64 days.
I'm not expecting Wii-U to be some beast of a console but I'm expecting a moderate leap that will put it in the situation of being more or less like a PC that plays games on medium vs PS4/720 being like a high-end PC that plays on high/ultra.
Unknowns of how Nintendo customises the GPU, how much RAM they put in and how much eDRAM it ends up with, since it's said to have a nice amount, will determine the size of the jump.
As for your final paragraph, 4K isn't happening next gen. Stop thinking PC enthusiast, this is consoles. MS and Sony aren't going to design their console around matching Samaritan technically. Whatever they do will be able to surpass it artistically anyways.
And finally, the fact that you say N64 to PS2 wasn't a generational leap and act as if Dreamcast to PS3 isn't a huge generational leap and think we will have a leap bigger than that just proves that PC tech discussion is your forte and not this.
