That's not really the way it works. You're supposed to sell out of, or nearly sell out of, your first shipment in launch weekend. Sony had multiple shipments prepared for post-launch I'm sure, which retailers obviously won't be ordering if they aren't selling well, and that means a huge hit on Sony finanically.

That is certainly wrong. The Vita has simple shipment constraints due to maxed-out oled manufacturing capacities. Sony would never have missed XMas seasons both in NA and Europe if the manufacturing capacities had existed.

Did Sony stop manufacturing the Vita the day it launched? If not, why wouldn't they have follow-up shipments ready almost immediately after launch?

Early in launch cycles, it's typical for a manufacturer to use 1-2 day air freight to a destination country to continue feeding consumer demand for the brand-new device.

Of course, this is assuming that demand for the device far outstrips supply, which is almost always the case with a popular launch item. Other devices that have seen this used extensively following launch weeks: PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, iPad, iPad 2, iPhone, continue ad nauseum. It's a really bad sign that Japan seems pretty indifferent toward the Vita.
