I love your enthusiasm but I don't think God of War can ever surpass Gran Turismo (It would be awesome if it ever did though :D), it being in the hack n' slash genre and being 18+ limits its potential audience too much for it to be that huge. However, if Sony supported the God of War franchise like they did with Uncharted 3, i.e. mass bundling and advertise the hell out of it, I think the God of War franchise can be absolutely huge, like 6.5- 8.5 million huge, so not quite Halo/ GT but huge nonetheless.
Look at the sales increase from Uncharted 1 - 2, to achieve that increase Uncharted 2 had to be much more critically acclaimed than UC1, had better advertisement (Still not great though), introduced multiplayer and was bundled a lot. Also look at the Resistance franchise, the first one which was bundled hugely managed to pass a massive 4 million sales, almost double that of the next best-selling Resistance game, now look at how God of War 3 is selling compared to 1 or 2 which were on a console with a far larger install base, it's not even 2 years old and it's almost at 4.5 million with the Trilogy Edition, it flew past them with ease even with terrible advertisement, no multiplayer in a day and age when people turn their noses up at anything where you can't shoot other players online, hardly any bundling at all, in fact I remember God of War 3 released into this PS3-shortage-hits-god-of-war-3-launch... But look now, it's still on track to be the first game in the genre to pass 5 million with ease, it could even reach 6 million eventually with the upcoming Quattro Pack and with God of War IV hype and its inevitable release which will help to drive great sales for God of War 3 like UC3 did for UC2.
If Sony put some proper effort into marketing the game and Sony Santa Monica can think of a great multiplayer mode/modes to appease the multiplayer nuts, God of War can be really enormous.
