I don't think Sony messed anything. They didn't have time to produce more units to launch it before Christmas in more than one region. As such, they chose Japan as it is their home and where the PSP found greatest success. As far as I can see, this was a perfectly rational decision, the one I would have taken if I was in charge.

Regarding the price, I agree it is too high to move many units. However, Sony already stated they are selling at loss at $249. Perhaps they cannot go lower at this point. As the internal numbers are trade secret, there is no way we can actually know if they could risk a lower entry price.
