The him not being racist add is because there were things posted in a ghostwritten column under his name that were racist.
Essentially in the late 80's early 90's he paid someone with similiar libretarian views to write stuff for him under his name. Eventually he trusted the guy enough he stopped looking over it.
Then the guy said something really racist.
