HappySqurriel said: I remember saying that the 3DS struggling at $250 was not a particularly good sign for the PS-Vita and many people "defended" the PS-Vita talking about how great of a value it was ... I think the lesson of the DS and 3DS is that individuals value a portable gaming system at somewhere between $150 and $200 regardless of the features and components of the system; after all, the initial price of the 3DS could (partially) be justified based on what people were willing to spend on a DS-Lite when the 3DS launched and yet people were unwilling to pay that much for it. On top of this, I have noticed that the market for electronic gadgets has become a lot more competitive at the $200 to $300 range since the 3DS launched. Fancy ebook-readers/7-inch tablets are starting at the $200 range and there are (often) 10 inch tablets that are now $300, and there is a greater number of smart-phones that are showing up in this low price range with/without a contract. While I think that tablets are in their infancy, and have a long way to go before they're practical, I think a lot of parents may be more willing to spend $200 on a Kindle than $250 on a PS-Vita if they're given a choice. With that said, I wouldn't be surprised if the PS-Vita does better at $250 than the 3DS did; but I think that price-point has been demonstrated to be not particularly good for a portable system and the market has shifted to make it much less attractive in the past few months. |
Sony isn't marketing the Vita towards children. They said right now their focus will male, early 20s. At $250 marketing to kids wouldn't be very effective anyway....

That's what Sony said about the PSP, and then they marketed it heavily towards teenagers when they became the primary market for the device ...
While I have little or no doubts that the PSP will have a lot of adults that buy it, adults (for the most part) are much more price sensitive than teenagers because they have a lot more expenses and a lot more demands on the money they do make. If they really want to sell it to people in their early 20s price will be much more important.

I still think 249.99 is a good price range for the Vita for what it offers, I was surprise to hear that the system will be priced the same as the PSP, but am I glad it was, I purchased my PSP in 2005 when it was launched at 249.99! 349.99 is a bit too much even for a 3G enabled system imo.
When the 3DS was released at 249.99 I was surprised, it shouldnt of been that much, maybe at least 199.99 with its improvements and its gimmick enhancements (3D).

Gimmick! There have been plenty of times when I have enjoyed using the 3D on the 3DS, it makes a lot of games better. For a while if I remember correctly they thought the wii was just a gimmick. They thought wrong.

I wouldnt use the 3D feature on the 3DS personally, for both the battery and for the sake of my eyes. I dont see how 3D effect can help a person or be beneficial for the whole gaming experience, its just there as a gimmick for people to get attracted to, Nintendo's smart with making gimmicks, their selling no doubt about it, there are more people buying a 3DS just for the 3D effect than for actual games lol.
As for the Wii, like DarkDesent said, almost all the Good wii games did not use the motion controls , with the only exception being Skyward sword, which was another smart idea for Nintendo, they managed to implement a gimmick AND made it a requirement. It was also actually successful in selling it over to hard core gamers and fans of the series. I cant think of any other Nintendo game that used motion controls more than 15% of an entire game other than Zelda SS (excluding the mii games).

Sure there are more people buying 3DS for the 3D gimmicks rather than actual games, just look at Mario Kart 7 sales *facepalm*.
Motion control and 3D are just a ways to enanche gaming experience but yes, they could also be used as gimmicks. if you see those only as gimmicks, it's your problem. The same way I see high-end graphics often used as a gimmick to make people buy games like Crysis or Uncharted that otherwise would have no reason to exsist.
