Pretty sure that McDonalds is the leader by a wide margin, but people still prefer the burgers from Burger King.

Having said that, there isn't really a third player in this business. At least in France you have also a Quick (which still doesn't come close to the quality of McD and BK).

BurgerKing: ~700 stores

Interesting, from what I could find BK is at 1000~ here and McDonalds at 1200. I truly think Subway has to be the most popular here though, there's one every street corner I swear.
