Well, in the beginning of the game I followed the Imperial guy because I had no clue what was going on other than a dragon was attacking. Since I had already decided I was going to join the thieves guild and Dark Brotherhood, I abandoned that quest and went after the Storm Cloaks since I thought that was the main story.
Upon joining the Storm Cloaks I found that Ulfric is a massive dick and later found out it isn't part of the main story. I did the first Storm Cloak quest where I had to kill an ice wraith and haven't done anything else. They both suck.
