What happened to Square (Enix)? They used to put out phenomenal games in rapid succession:

1987 - Final Fantasy
1988 - Final Fantasy II
1990 - Final Fantasy III
1991 - Final Fantasy IV
1992 - Final Fantasy V
1994 - Final Fantasy VI
1997 - Final Fantasy VII (longest wait to date)
1999 - Final Fantasy VIII
2000 - Final Fantasy IX
2001 - Final Fantasy X
2002 - Final Fantasy XI
2006 - Final Fantasy XII
2009 - Final Fantasy XIII
2010 - Final Fantasy XIV

Seriously, most iterations were released within a year or two from one another, yet now everything's spaced out and at this rate we won't get VsXIII till 2013, XV 2014 at the earliest.

The hell....and 8-10 are some of the best games ever and they made them all with only a year between each release.

I don't know what the reason is but maybe SQEX should hire more staff for each team so the games have a larger workforce and therefore quicker dev cycle.

They stayed true to the same core mechanics and improved the game system after each installation. It wasnt until after X that they decided to go on a "New" path which involved reworking the gameplay formula which is why we've seen FFXI (Online) , FFXII (MMORPG like non online action RPG) , FFXIII (Somewhat turn based but with MMORPG like strategies , i.e tank, healer, attacker), FFXIV (whole new online gaming system) etc..

I'd say they started on their new path with FFX. That was the first game to get rid of the world map.
