some broadcasting stations are supported almost completely by advertising alone... you really think xbl takes more to run than them?

Perhaps not.  However, last time I looked at my 360 Dashboard, the only ad that I saw was for World of Warcraft.  It was repeated probably 4 times on 4 different pages.  I'm no science-matician but I don't think that one single ad (every other "ad" is just showing content available on XBL) from one single company is going to pay for the entire service.

so the ads don't change, they don't come up randomly? its just the same ad every time you turn on your 360?

It'll probably be something different in a week or so but that same Chuck Norris ad has been there since the latest update.  Aside from that, the ads I've seen are like "Sonic CD is available for download in the Games Marketplace" or "New Gears of War 3 content is available".  I don't think M$ can make a profit advertising themselves for themselves.

I'd say that every few weeks, there's a different ad.  Sometimes, a company or a movie offers a free wallpaper or a free gamer pic, though.  I don't have the slightest idea how that works.  I remember when The Dark Knight came out.  I got a free Dark Knight wallpaper/theme and some pics of Harvey Dent, Batman, and the Joker.  Maybe M$ profited.  Maybe they didn't.  I just know I got some cool swag.  That kind of stuff isn't uncommon.  We can download movie trailers and stuff, too.  Again, I don't know who benefits--the company, Microsoft, or me (or all of us).

Meanwhile, we probably get 6 different ads in a one minute commercial break during an episode of Monday Night Raw on pay TV.  I think it's apples and oranges.

well i'd expect that regardless of if its the same ad or not whenever an ad is shown microsoft gets paid for it

"It was repeated probably 4 times on 4 different pages"

taking your example above if my assumption is currect i'd expect that microsoft got paid 4 times for that... on tv when for example an ad gets shown multiple times in a day i'm pretty sure that the network is paid for everytime the ad is shown

if we take your 4 ad example above and multiply it by millions of xbl users you can understand why some people may think that xbl may be supported through the ad revenue but since we don't have the specifics on how it works we can't be sure
