The Vita looks like a fine system, but there is something that the 3DS can have that it can't. Huge franchises.

Oh really? Just look at what's announced :P
Call of duty, Assassins creed, Uncharted, Killzone, Bioshock, LittleBigPlanet and FIFA just to name a few.

I really think sony learnt their lesson with the PSP, and plenty of 3rd parties are signed up (just look at the list of announcments), it will be very well supported.

The DS had Call of Duty, but it didn't do well. When the games are available on the HD consoles, PC, and even the Wii with some adjustments, I can't imagine CoD making huge numbers on a handheld. Assassin's Creed already appeared on the DS and PSP, but only had moderate sales. Killzone on the PSP never reached a million units. Uncharted is a big franchise, but not huge per se. Bioshock is an unknown quantity on handhelds, LittleBigPlanet is another moderate series, as are handheld versions of Fifa.

I'm not trying to diss the Vita here. There are plenty of big games coming out for it. But systems like the DS, PS2, 360, and Wii are defined by games that sell something along the lines of 10 million or more units or at least to 10% of console owners. The Vita will have many worthwhile titles, but I don't see any of those as big hits that can singlehandedly carry the system.

Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe Uncharted is a franchise best suited for handhelds, and Golden Abyss will become the best selling Action game of all time. Stranger things have happened. But from where I stand, I see the Vita as a system without a few key titles that will sell it to millions, like Mario Kart seems to be doing for the 3DS.

Yeah I guess you're right, mostly; I think Call of Duty will sell really well on vita, because it will play and look a lot like the console versions, and if that's emphasized in advertisements, I think it'll easily sell multiple millions. The reason why Call of duty didn't do well on DS is because the game wasn't that great, it played nothing like the console versions and it's target audience generally do not own DSs (hardcore gamers and bros). But the VITA is definitely targeted at the hardcore, and a console-like portable cod will definitely attract some bros.

Uncharted will probably sell very well, same for FIFA, Assassins creed and quite a few others, but you're right, nothing will sell like those Nintendo 3DS titles.(Could maybe get close though).

Time will tell.

PSP succeeded in getting "console-like" in its own case, but that did not help. It needs unique games and not "console junior" games. Take the "Stories" games on PSP for instance: they were unique expansions on the hit series and did decently well, but games that were clearly just junior partners of their console counterparts did poorly.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.
