It should come as no surprise that demand for the PlayStation Vita is incredibly high in the device's home country of Japan. But according to Andriasang, which cited a Mainichi Digital story, Sony increased its expected first-day Vita shipments domestically to keep up with rampant demand.

According to Andriasang's interpretation of Mainichi Digital's story, "initial shipment[s]" of Vita "may exceed 700,000 units." The piece goes on to explain that the author of the article "heard from various sources related to the matter that Sony originally planned an initial shipment of 500,000 units. However, due to pre-order demand, Sony added an additional 200,000 units."

It's unclear how many units Sony plans to initially ship when the PlayStation Vita comes to North America, Europe and Australia in February of 2012.
