The link isn't working for me, though I firmly believe that DVD was in fact established before the PS2 came out. I remember getting a $150 DVD player about the time the PS2 was new, or perhaps before it, which made it so the PS2's influence wasn't massive.
It did, however, still exist. I've known a lot of people that have owned a PS2 and not a DVD player. While the people you associate with may own DVD players just for movie watching they do not represent the spectrum of PS2 users.
