I think he ended up with a bad outcome. Agreeing to that treaty would also have been a bad outcome. I don't know if he chose the lesser of two evils, but certainly his only choices were evils.

On topic, what he did was ballsy. I don't know if it was smart, but it certainly wasn't cowardly.
