From Nintendo's E3 site, "A single self-loading media bay will play 12-centimeter proprietary high-density optical discs for the new console, as well as 12-centimeter Wii optical discs." Nintendo doesn't do licensing fees, so don't expect bluray of any form. There are plenty of other discs out there with similar features and storage that they can use that will provide them lower prices as well as probably better security (not mainstream). |
Historically, Nintendo home consoles have not used true "proprietary" formats for optical disks, and opted instead for "mainstream formats" formats for the game media
GC - Mini DVDs, with some actual slight hardware changes to prevent piracy and prevent dvd playback
Wii - DVD-r, without licensing to playback dvds, although soft mod could turn it into dvd player
Wii U - (logically) Blu Ray, without licensing to playback bluray movies, although soft mod could probably turn it into bluray player
Nintendo typically tries to keep the technology as cheap as possibly not focusing on cutting edge technologies to lower costs, with exception to an innovating technology or two like motion controls or adding a glasses-free 3d screen, no reason (and history agrees with me) for them to go out of their way to develop or obtain an entirely new format, they will pay licensing fees just as they have for the past two generations.
