Well, I personally believe an argument is the act of two or more parties trying to prove, or argue, opposing points, or arguments. It doesn't have to be hostile in nature. I have arguments with my friends all the time. These arguments are usually accompanied with laughter, with both parties genuinely interested in each other's opinion.

Now, I will agree that the connotation for arguments usually involve hostility because the average person is incapable of having genuine peaceful debates.

Interesting separation of definition and connotation. So to you argument and discussion are interchangable terms, given the argument isn't hostile in nature. Perhaps we can trace our differences in the separation of definition and connotation to our pasts. I remember when poppa TadpoleJackson and momma trashleg would yell at each other in the kitchen and tell me to go play in the backyard. Usually Uncle Snesboy or Grandpa d21lewis would come by and tell me that momma and poppa were just arguing and everything would be okay. That might be why I find the term argument inseparable from hostility. And you?

Same here. Most of the people I've encountered growing up couldn't have peaceful arguments due to a lack of self-control. Eventually, I met some peaceful people who were capable of trying to prove a point without any hostile feelings. These arguments usually resulted in one of us learning something about each other, the topic, and ourselves.
