Well, I personally believe an argument is the act of two or more parties trying to prove, or argue, opposing points, or arguments. It doesn't have to be hostile in nature. I have arguments with my friends all the time. These arguments are usually accompanied with laughter, with both parties genuinely interested in each other's opinion.
Now, I will agree that the connotation for arguments usually involve hostility because the average person is incapable of having genuine peaceful debates.
