Yes and no.
Yes if you are looking into playing new games for more then a year or two. Once WiiU launches next year Wii will pretty much die software wise. When the Next-Box launches if it does next year expect a year or two of support but most of the new great games will be next generation. Then PS4 will likely launch in 2013 and the support for PS3 will likely die down to a dull roar by 2015. If you want a next generation console your best choice for long term would be a PS3 because PS4 should be the last platform to see release. But either way expect games to begin phasing out within two years for the HD twins and the Wii will die within a year or so of WiiU's release.
No if your looking for a great console that can play existing games. But I would wait a year to buy a current console if your not looking for future software. Fact is next winter Wii's price will dive to 99$ or cheaper and if the Next-Box is released expect 360 to drop to as low as 129.99$. Even PS3 will drop even if PS4 doesn't come out soon. Software on Wii will begin to drop rapidly and within two years of the Next-Box for 360 and PS4 for PS3 expect their games to be dirt cheap as well.
I know at the end of GameCube's life a year into Wii. I could get brand new Nintendo published games as cheap as 9.99$ and third party games like Billy Hatcher for as low as 4.99$ brand new. I found the same thing with DreamCast when it went down and Xbox was just as good though I couldn't find games anywhere by the time I had my 360.
So it all depends if you want it to play existing games and those coming out in the next two or so years. Or if you want to be buying great new games for the next 4-6 years. If your looking for cheap already existing games and content I would say wait a year and buy a Wii/360/PS3, if not buy a next generation console at launch or shortly after!
