Alcohol has some interesting pros and cons here. It may have caused the boy to commit suicide (poor inhibition), but it made it less painful (depending on how intoxicated the boy is).
It would have been more manly for him to jump in sober. Not saying that he should jump in at all, though.
Oh, and condolences to his family and friends.
