Now that you mentioned it, it makes sense, or perhaps, they know that Mario Kart has a bigger installed fanbase that will subsequently increase the 3DS userbase and subsequently Kid Icarus sales could be higher. I think that for now, they are trying to increase the pool of 3DS users, so later titles can sell well.
