I did the same, only with the massive amount of iron ores I had mines from exploring and switched between Iron Daggers and Hide Bracers. It's pretty dissapointing when you find out that Heavy Dragon Armour has less armour rating than the Daedric Equivalent (although Light Dragon Armour is the best of it's kind).
Even then, forged armour has long since lost it's usefulness for me, except for a few pieces. The Ebony Mail from Boethia is one of the best Heavy Armour in the game and the Spellbreaker >>>> Any shield I've found out (including Daedric (Legendary) and Dragon (Legendary) as well).
And yes, it still suffers the same gripes as in all Elder Scrolls game. Some skills level up too fast, thus making you level up too fast, while others level up painstainkgly slow (Alchemy takes forever to level up). Smithing and Lockpicking are the new Acrobatics >_<. I'm just waiting for a Leveling mod (like the OOO Leveling Mod for Oblivion) to take down levelling a notch (the 4x longer level up on OOO was the best).
