Being that the most active pirates I know have the money to buy a legitimate copy of the content for their desired use, I think claiming piracy exists because of income inequality is 100% BS ...

cause they feel there is inflation in the economy, they use their money wisely

so they think whatever they can get free they will and spend their money where costs are going up

its common sense and logic, nobody steals food if they have a  good job to work and make their own food

Whether you're talking about music, movies, books or videogames piracy is the results of businesses holding onto a broken and outdated business model.

that is also the case but there is inflation also

when greece is out of jobs, britain has 2million unemployment,USA is going with 10-20% unemployment and the concentration of all of worlds wealth is towards the wesrtern nation which is create on $15trillion USA debt and $15trillion European Union debt, what will the people do?

With the introduction of low cost high speed internet connections the marginal cost of producing an additional "sale" of content is very low and is getting cheaper all the time, and (at this point in time) content like books and songs have a marginal cost of nearly $0.00. What this means is that the content should be priced at the highest level where the vast majority of individuals see no value in "stealing" the content in order to maximize profit.

but if you decrease inflation and they think that other commodities are available at good costs, why will they not legally download songs, books, video games from itunes,Steam, etc where you have an added incentive of having ur games always available in the cloud to download from and you don't have to hack the game to play.

All tension and work out of the way, they will go an purchase legally

As an example of what I mean, music companies would probably sell far more than 4 times as much music if the songs were priced at $0.25 (and more than 10 times as much music if they were sold at $0.10) than they're selling at the $1 per song price.

thats your assumption that demand will increase but $0.99 is already pretty cheap and with inlfation happening in the economy why would the music lables want to decrease their income

Now, rather than try to adapt to the new market, companies are trying to force people to pay the prices they dictate by eliminating the black market competition who're selling the product at a healthy margin over the marginal cost; in most cases, the marginal cost is (roughly) $0.00 and the healthy margin is the money they generate from advertising.

most illegal downloads are done by p2p which has no advertising or very low advertising

The way to "solve" piracy is to tell the media companies to adapt or die ... If a pirate can afford to "sell" a copy of an album for (roughly) $0.00 why do they need to sell it for $15.00+

the music companies margin would be the same as inflation will decrease the money's value
