As I from a Eastern background, I very familiar with "beating your kids", however you will notice that it was at most a slap or two. Usually when things went beyond that, it made things much worse overall for the parents and the kid. As time goes on it is becoming less acceptable to slap your kid even in immigrant communities.

However I disagree that grabbing your kid or pushing your kid is abuse.

In the West, kids respond very negatively to such actions by their parents.

At his age he would likely do something very stupid, like running away from home or physically assaulting the rest of his family.

As I said with normal kids having parents yell at you and threatening you is usually enough to set you straight.
However, with disturbed kids you have to try the more soft approach.
