This is one of the reasons why I think we need to develop a more flexible judicial system that can protect citizens from the likely violent repeat offender while not being overly punitive to first time more minor offenders. While there are cases where a person can commit (or attempt) murder, or some other violent offence, and still be making a rational/reasonable (therefore indicating some form of rehabilitation is possible), when someone demonstrates violent/sexual sadistic behaviour when committing a crime like this there really is no reason to believe they can be rehabilitated.
Realistically, after he was convicted the first time he should (probably) have never been free every again.
