In terms of which is the better game, which uses the mechanics for the sake of progression more fluidly and which is better-constructed for playing, my answer would be Gears of War 3.
I just find the shooting in Gears a lot more enjoyable. There are a few sequences in Uncharted 3 that are really great - and they're all chase sequences - but Gears is more enjoyable to me on the whole. And, you know, playing through Gears campaigns with my little brother is still some of the most fun I've had in my entire life.
I wonder aloud if my Nintendo-oriented avatar will make people think I'm less biased about this.
