I'm a complete atheist who doesn't believe a persons spirit/life enegy/consciousness/whatever you want to call it, can exist independently of the physical body. But the memory of people definitely lives on in the consciouness of others.


We are predisposed to get really attached to people even after death, yes. It's still irrational. Even drawn-out funerals are irrational, the dead body might as well be a plank with their name on it for all the connection it has to that person.
