At the dawn of the generation I was what one might call 'casual', I played regularly but didn't know a lot about games or the industry. Probably about 80% of my game collection was 3 series: Mario, Pokemon and Zelda. Now I'm a huge JRPG fan, with a varied library of games spanning various platforms, historical and present. I consider myself quite knowledgeable about the gaming industry and games in general.
My preferred genre have pretty much stayed the same: I like JRPGs (although before I had only played Pokemon), Action-Adventure, Strategy and Platformers.
