Every side was interesting.
You had the US entering late and providing aid that saved both the Soviets and English through Lend Lease, as well as their destruction of the Japanese empire and nukes.
You had Germany and the marvels they made turning the war...STG-44 being one of my favorite, which changed the face of small arms for the next century.
You had the horrors of the Eastern front and the sacrifices of the Soviet people due to two madmen - Stalin and Hitler.
Finland's Winter War and War of Continultion were incredible. Simo Hayha may be the greatest soldier in history.
You had the Sino-Japanese war pitting former enemies in Mao and Chiang-Kai-Check against the Japanese onslaught.
And those are just starters. The war was horrible, but makes for unbelievable research. Many people could dedicate their lives to understanding the war, yet fail to grasp a fraction of the situation. Additionally, so much of the aftermath changed politics for ever afterwards.
Personally, though, the most interesting movements of the war were on the Eastern front - Operation Barbarossa, the Battle of Kursk and Stalingrad, as well as Operation Uranus. Soviet technology during the war was incredible, and a testament to what a desperate war economy can do.
Back from the dead, I'm afraid.
