If you want to talk about all of South America. The presense of Homophobia in Guyana levels equal to the rest of south american bascially disporves your point. In general, if you look at what information we have about the local natives, you find that they themselves were pretty "Anti-gay" before the spanish ever got there. Although there definition of gay was "You get penetrated". You could screw your slaves all you want because it was a sign of power, but if you had the opposite happen or engaged in an act with another citizen and you'd get executed. Lesbinism... no clue honestly, considering male based society, it probably wasn't even considered a thing. Heck, that's sorta how it was in europe too.
The Aztecs in particular thought that gayness was the downfall of their culture and empire once before.
This was actually quite ironic considering they essentially had 4 genders to take into account the transgendered.
Everyone was pretty homophobic except the Toltecs anyway.
As for Aids... levels are fairly high in south america actually in line with most other countries. In general aids reporting can be a tricky thing though because people often will avoid going to the doctor out of fear in stigmitized countries.
It just seems low because a normal prevelence rate is something like .4% while somewhere like Swaziland ends up at 25% plus.
