What makes us 'human'? We eat, drink, have sex like any other animal, but we are different and of higher level than them. Our intellect is the key to differentiate us from other animals. But people always don't understand what is good or bad for him. In order to prevent this, we have law in the society to regulate the external activities of men and women. But their soul is not regulated by law. Soul makes you good and bad. And religion makes your soul act good.
People who follow religion and fear an almighty God have the feeling that the God is watching him. Hence he thinks twice before committing any wrong even if he has chance. Religion gives you that control.
With that said, I surely can say that religion has and will always have the importance to us.
