I am not surprised at all. Actually I am surprised that they even tried.

Europe is full with british french and german chains. Everywhere I go I read the same names. Be it food, electronics or DIY markets. Walmart failed miserably in Germany. I shopped in a few and my impression was: It had the flair of Aldi, Lidl but the prices of a better shop. It was simply WAY to expensive for what it offered.

Best Buy would fail in mainland Europe because Media Markt, Saturn are there and they dont go to UK so it seems UK is very competitive. Europe is pretty much done doubt you will get a foothold here unless you offer something different.

The 4 biggest retailer chains in the world:

1: Walmart (American)
2: Carrefour (French)
3: Metro (German)
4: Tesco (British)

So 3 of the 4 biggest retail chains are european and they control Europe. Walmart cant compete and thats the Number 1. Nobody else can have significant success in Europe unless you have something noone else does. Competing directly is useless imo.
