Sonic Heroes is one of the bestselling Sonic games ever, so Sega actually did a lot of things right. They got away from the stupid Sonic lives among humans storylines from the Sonic Adventure games and as a result got closer to the roots of Sonic than the previous 3D titles. It's the Sonic Adventure games that alienated the core fanbase, because not only is the story way overdone, but the games are also filled with crappy gameplay segments that only serve to slow the games down. Sales numbers tell the opposite of the story you are presenting here and personally I would rate Sonic Adventure 5/10, SA2 6/10 and Sonic Heroes 8/10 (on a scale solely for Sonic games). But yeah, I am old enough to have been there when the Sonic series started, so my defintion of what makes a Sonic game is vastly different from someone who started with Sonic Adventure. The way you talk, I get the impression that your personal experience with Sonic started around then, because you see Sonic Heroes as a game that moved away from what Sonic is. |
Sorry for the late reply.
Sonic Heroes selling? That's what happens when you try to branch out to extra audiences. The gameplay segments in some of the levels (especialy the Tails/Eggman levels) were pretty hectic, but they at the very least game you pure speed with the Sonic/SHado levels instead of trying to combine three unique types of gameplay into one game, at the same time.
You are right about me starting with Adventre, but that doesen't mean I never played the original 16-bit games, and saw what Sonic originally was.
