In terms of the lasting effects of the 2nd World War, I would have to say I find the effects on the European colonial empires the most interesting. In particular, the U.K emerging victorious and without being occupied (excluding the Channel Islands), but being economically broken and haven run up huge debts (over 200% of GDP). Decolonisation is of course another important and interesting effect, during the post-war era.
