Earlier today, we received a leaked report from JeuxVideo – a French-based blog – stating GTA V will be “two and a half times” as big as Red Dead Redemption in terms of map size. Likewise, we saw a lot of positive reactions towards this revelation. However, this opens up some concerns when you search search engines or other social media websitesasking if this ginormous map size will fit under three DVDs for Xbox 360? Upon digging with past data from Rockstar’s previous games, we believe we found a sound answer for this.

GTA V is Bigger Than GTA IV But How About L.A Noire?
Even before Rockstar confirmed GTA V last year, we already receive reports how the game would instantly trounce GTA IV in terms of map size and list of characters. For those who are unaware, GTA IV needs one for Xbox 360 when it was revealed on 2008 (two discs for PC).
Comparison of GTA V and L.A Noire (File size)
Actually, this is a good question because as you can see, L.A Noire’s gigantic map was also based from Los Angelesin the late forties while GTA V will project the modern-day Los Angeles, California including Hollywood (depicted as Los Santos / Vinewood).
When you look at the characters, there’s a possibility GTA V’s cast will become bigger, especially when you based this theory from that report we’ve heard last week that Rockstar won’t use L.A Noire’s in-house facial motion technology simply because the game’s characters are too huge costing the company a lot of money (not to mention Rockstar and Team Bondi had a previous problem in partnership).
Upon checking the system requirements of L.A Noire, its Xbox 360 (Complete Edition) has a file size of 21GB and it needs three DVD for Xbox 360 to work (needs disc swapping on some point of the game too). Naturally, we believe GTA V will have a file size a little bit bigger than the investigative game but considering each disc has a max size of 8.7GB – this means Rockstar can still use the other remaining space (4GB) on the disc for GTA V.
One should also consider that the reason why L.A Noire file size was so big is because of its unique facial-motion technology; however, in the case for Grand Theft Auto V, we believe Rockstar will use its own Euphoria / RAGE engine (could be an upgraded version) shrinking the files a little bit.
Wrap-up
Personally, I don’t think RS will go as much as investing to four DVDs on a single-game simply because it’s more expensive to manufacture (plating disc is not as cheap as you may think). Naturally, the company plans to invest its money on the development of the game or making promotions not by manufacturing it.
The only time I believe Rockstar would need another Disc is if they decided to remake other cities on California aside from Los Angeles and use a new type of graphics engine that eats more file size than what Team Bondi utilized for L.A Noire.
