Yeah, most will just burn their eyes out and never touch a Final Fantasy game again. It's one of the worst games to start with imo, as it's one of, if not the, ugliest Final Fantasy game. It just hasn't aged well at all graphicwise (is that a word?). Even the cutscenes looks kinda bad, and those were mighty impressive back in the days. For people who have yet to be seduced by the Final Fantasy magic, the graphics will in many cases scare them away before they're even close to getting hooked by the, apart from graphics, great game.

I'd say IV (remake), VI, IX, X and XII are good games to start with (I haven't played XIII), and once the little padawan has gotten some experience he can choose freely as the risk for lifelong injuries is gone.
