MechWarrior is based on the BattleTech universe. All of the information that is in MechWarrior games comes from BattleTech, the Mechs, Worlds, battles, characters... Everything. BattleTech is owned by Topps, which would include all of the Intellecutal Property within. Microsoft only owns the rights to digitally recreate them for Video Games and such.
