Here's the thing though, you DONT have to play with those characters. at all. You could stick to Sonic, Tails and Knuckles and it would be the same game. The whole team dynamic was just Sega's way of covering up that each team represented an actual difficulty level. Sonic &co was medium, Shadow & CO. was the hardest, Amy & CO was the easiest. Chaotix was some kind of weird scavenger hunt crap and it wasnt that bad to me. At least i wasnt wrestling with the stupid camera. They all played the same. Constrast that to SA 1 where you had to to play as everyone to see the "real" ending. Tails was alright, Knuckles was meh and the other 3 sucked. SA2 actual made it worst, where you HAD to play as someone other than Sonic to progress. Did you really enjoy Knuckles, Rouge, Eggman, and Tails' sections?? I didnt, I hated it. I agree that the story blew, but im not playing Sonic for story. I want half way decent Sonic stories, Archie does a pretty good job.

Actually, you had to play with all four teams in Sonic Heroes too, if you wanted to see the real ending. Also, there were slight differences between the speed and power characters, only the flying ones were all the same. For example, Amy couldn't do a light dash and the combo attacks of Omega you had to carefully use in order to not commit suicide on smaller platforms.

But yeah, putting all those characters into teams to maintain similar and consistent gameplay across all stages was a good idea. It was a good mix of speed, platforming and beating up bad guys. It was just annoying that the game had some annoying bugs that caused you to die. Jumping between rails was the most guilty of this, I usually switched to the flying character because that way I could fly back to the rails in case the game decided to make my character jump far to the side instead of just to the rail where I wanted to go.

yeah your right, I havent played it since it first came out all those years ago, I need to hunt down a copy.

pretty much, i cant for the life of me understand the love for SA series, its fine when your SOnic or Shadow, but who the hell buys a Sonic game to play some horrible 3rd person shooter?? Sonic can have as much friends as he wants as long as they are not doing stupid crap like fishing. Advance series got it right too.
