I'm glad that charges are being pursued - that was a pretty damned severe assault and the kid deserves a harsher punishment than three days suspension for it.

Great , but if he wants to stay out of trouble he should keep his mouth shut. Being gay is not ok is an opinion that majority of people share, especially in his age group, and he should respect it.

Why should he respect other peoples bigotry? They're the ones with the problem, not him.
