We were discussing those types of motion control in 2005 like I said. It's just the easiest way to copy the behaviour of a mouse. It's not like the Wii was the first to come up with this type of control. It's been around for ages. Nintendo just marketed and perfected it brilliantly, but the controls itself date back ages.

Anyway, it's a bit of a shame motion control seems to overtake this discussion. The article is full of great material about the RROD issue with the 360 and that's more interesting. Even if MS or whoever though about incorporating motion control, they didn't and perhaps it wouldn't have even been the succes as it currently is on the Wii.
