This gen has a real issue with horror games and I think I've figured out why.
You really can't make a "AAA" horror game. I don't think its possible. Same reason why you can't shoot a horror movie with an Independence Day like production. It just doesn't work when everything is so glossy and polished.
Horror games need to be dirty, unsettling, weird, unusual and come up with fresh ways to scare the players. By following todays AAA production guidelines, game companies ruin any chance a game can have to be scary.
Prime examples of AAA production ruining horror - Alan Wake, Condemned 2, Dead Space, Resident Evil franchise lately.
Prime examples of horror games working and truly being scary - Condemned 1, Amnesia, Silent Hill 2, Resident Evil 1
Every time a horror game is truly successful when it comes to getting under your skin, it is a somewhat odd, gritty and bizarre experience.
