Just think about it, the Vita is almost there. First gen multiplatform Vita games already look pretty close to their home console versions, and the game size limit will expand beyond 4GB as the years go on.
It just needs a 5000 mAh internal battery and software to send A/V wirelessly to a smart display (or a dumb display + PS3); Then you could have a full fledged home console and handheld console for the price of one and any hand held game could be played as a home console game or vice versa.

This would also allow for some nice features to be shared for both home and handheld experience: it would be really easy to change displays (no wires to mess with), every multiplayer game could be played on numerous large displays (since all Vita multiplayer games should support Ad-hoc), you could switch from gaming on the large display to gaming on the Vita's screen seamlessly (to go somewhere or just to free up the large display for others to use right away), you could quickly pause anywhere you are in the game for long periods of time (like PSP's sleep mode), you could create a temporary save anywhere you are in the game (like PSP GO's save state), everyone would be guarenteed to have a mic and camera for cross game chat (via Vita Party Chat).
Just imagine the possibilities the successor to the Vita will have beyond this.
It is the future of gaming I hope to see.
