Everquest 2 was an technical mess with high system requirements and an unimaginative design when it was released; and, while I'm told they were steadily addressing the core issues for years after release, they pissed off a lot of people who were upset by adding bizarre features (like ordering a pizza through the game) while a large portion of the game was broken.
Blizzard did a lot of things right, like keeping graphics fairly modest to ensure people with a few year old systems could play the game, and releasing a game with few issues (largest one being loot lag on high population servers). It didn't matter that SOE fixed EQ2 years after it was released because everyone and their guild was already playing WoW; and EQ2 already had an awful reputation.
