no i don't actually -- i'll plat dark souls and i know i'll have to go to a wiki site or whatever to learn every detail of the game but i'm being very careful to avoid any spoilers this first play though.  the figuring it out part is a lot of why i like it.  xD

also, now that i re-read your post two back ... that description of dark sould reminds me very much of how i describe super metroid; can skip bosses or take bosses in different orders as long as you know the right tricks.   i knew there was a reason i'm loving it so much!

Hope you find out then, it was a very interesting find for me (and made me feel sorry for a NPC too). 

The structure of the open world in Dark Souls is very similar to Super Metroid (and any other Metroidvania games, like SOTN) which is also a reason why i'm loving this game a lot too. You can go literally anywhere in the game, right from the start, just don't expect to survive much longer if you don't have the necessary items/equipment XD. I'm pondering creating a new character just to take different routes instead of the usual route if you don't have the master key (going for the underground bell instead of the gargoyles first). 

i must likely will, i'm playing in a completionist mannor right now trying to overturn every stone the game has to offer.  so as long as i can't do anything screw it up i ought to find it.  i killed the guy in the gold armor in the undead parish already.  didn't trust that guy, but i got a ring of favor and protection!!

Hate to tell you this, but you missed on an event line with him. I don't know now if you'll be able to get his armour later on in the game if you kill him in any other manner than the event line.
